Masks, Sculpture, PremiumJacob Simenoff Aleut Bentwood Hat This bentwood mask is painted red ochre color and black with traditional images of hunters and seals. It is adorned with what we believe to be walrus or sea lion whiskers. The hat presents a bird profile, and thus has painted birds eyes as well. Braided sinew strap, walrus tusk carvings of a bird and other shapes, and hematite plus other beads complete this package. Bentwood hats were used traditionally by Aleut, or Unangax people on their ocean hunting baidarka voyages. The hat would shade the hunter's eyes from the sun, and also hide the eyes from their sea mammal prey. There are few contemporary native makers of bentwood hats; the signature on this hat appears as Jacob Simenoff, 1997. See a video about bentwood hats here. Hat is 16 in. long x 8 in. wide x 9 in. to the top of the whiskers. Because of marine mammal content, this item can only be shipped to a U.S. address. Lincoln Milligrock Ivory Sled Dog Team Bracelet
Jewelry, CarvingsLincoln Milligrock Ivory Sled Dog Team Bracelet Lincoln Milligrock, Inupiaq artist from Little Diomede Island (1931 - 2010) was one of the last makers of carved animal bracelets. Most other bracelets of his we have encountered have featured sea mammals. This one features an entire sled dog team, including the sled and driver, four pairs of dogs pulling together, and the single lead dog. Recently strung on new elastic, the bracelet has an inside circumference of about 6 1/4 inches. It is approximately 3/8 inch wide. The animals are carved from fresh ivory and adorned with small scrimshaw details. The darker pieces are cross sections of old ivory, which contrast nicely with the white fresh ivory. While the artist was carving into the 21st century, we believe this bracelet dates to the 3rd or 4th quarter of the 20th century. Because the signature differs from later work of his, we believe this is an early piece. We continue to do research on it. Vintage Russian Dog Sled Team
CarvingsVintage Russian Dog Sled Team A dog sled team carving mounted on a hard black base. The carving comes in a box with a label with Cyrillic writing, including a date of 1974. From our research, it appears that the carving was made in Russia from bone. The base is made from Ebonite or a similar dark, hard rubber material. The back of the carving is unfinished, showing the organic nature of the material, which appears to be bone. Two caveats: we do not know if the carver was Siberian Yupik, or an indigenous person at all. We also suspect the carving was made from a template, because of the extreme evenness and symmetry of the features and details. Nevertheless, it is a very interesting and attractive carving. 8 1/2 in. long x 1 3/4 in. high; base is 5/8 in. deep, while carving is thinner. Please note that products containing any ivory or other marine mammal components cannot be shipped to New York or California. As of this writing, it is still legal to ship these products to all other states. Click here to see a brochure published by the U.S. Department of the Interior with more details on this topic. Because of the unknown origin of the material in this carving, we will observe the laws applying to marine mammal components.$350.00 - Sold out
