Inupiaq Eskimo/Inuit Pt. Hope White Baleen Basket Andrew Tooyak Sr.

Baleen baskets are among the most difficult to weave because of the stiffness of the material. Andrew Tooyak Sr. (1927 t0 200) Inupiaq from Point Hope, Alaska, was well known for his exquisite work. This basket stands out in two ways: first, it is entirely woven with white baleen over dark baleen. White baleen is not as prevalent as dark, so it is a more precious material. Second is the square shape: the vast majority of baleen baskets are round, a shape that flows more easily than a square, with its sharp angles. This square woven basket is exceptionally clean and symmetrical.

Basket is 4 1/2 inches in diameter x 3 1/8 inches high to the top of the ivory swan finial. The basket is signed “A. Tooyak Sr., PHO AK, inside the cover.
