Decontie & Brown Silver Necklace with Basket Weave and Rhyolite

Made from Argentium, this necklace incorporates local Maine traditions and materials. The dark rhyolite with white specks comes from Maine, found and cut by Jason Brown. The woven ash in the medallion represents the centuries old Maine Indian tradition of weaving with wood from the sacred ash tree.

The texture of the silver is better visible on the rear of the medallion; the texture is used throughout the entire medallion, front and back.

The hand made chain is 24 in. in length. The medallion is 1 3/4 in. high x 1 1/2 in. wide.

Argentium is an alloy that contains 93.5% silver (higher silver content than sterling); it is highly tarnish resistant, making it easier to maintain in humid climates.

Joe Cajero, Jr.: Sterling Silver Circle Pendant

Joe Cajero, Jr. is a highly accomplished sculptor. Winner of many awards, in 2014, Joe and his wife Althea were named Living Treasures at the Native Treasures show, sponsored by the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Santa Fe. Read more…

The circular shape of this pendant represents the Sun, the Moon, the Earth, and the Soul. The pendant includes a number of symbols from Cajero’s Natural Divinity Series, including the following:

The stars represent the vastness of the Heavens. They also represent the three levels of creation: conscious, subconscious, and the superconscious. Cajero also refer to this as body, mind, and spirit.

The panel to the left of the stars contains a wave pattern, which represents water’s life-giving properties, fluidity, and an openness for prosperity and wisdom to flow into one’s life.

The dragonflies represent the masculine essence of life, and the butterflies represent all that is feminine. Each goes through its own metamporphosis. I use them as symbols of change as we grow into new levels of awareness about life.

The panel that contains four circles of various sizes represents souls waiting to be conceived in their unique stages of spiritual evolution. The larger souls have attained higher levels of wisdom.

The bottom panel has two altar steps, representing a place of Oneness, prayers and meditations of the male and female.

Pendant is 2″ in diameter; it is 1/8″ thick. Black leather cord with sterling silver tips is included.

The symbols are in bas relief against an oxidized background. The dark background is more uniform than the images show; the camera picks up reflections that are generally not visible to the human eye.

    Mary Tafoya Turquoise Mosaic Necklace

    Mary Tafoya Turquoise Mosaic Necklace

Lorenzo and Mary Tafoya create innovative designs in mosaic which set them apart from most other Santo Domingo pueblo artists.

This necklace is out of the ordinary in a few regards, aside from its aesthetics. First, Mary Tafoya usually chooses more colors than turquoise and black. While most turquoise used in bead necklaces is stabilized, the turquoise in the cylindrical beads and in the centerpiece medallion is natural turquoise that had been handed down from Mary’s parents.

Additional materials: stablized turquoise (beads), sterling silver clasp, shell, black jade.

    Elizabeth James-Perry Choker

    ,

    Elizabeth James-Perry Choker

An exquisite traditional Wampanoag woven choker in stunning deep purple and white colors by artist Elizabeth James Perry. Perry combines the patterns on the individually cut beads to maximum aesthetic effect.

This is an orca (killer whale) representation reminiscent of Northwest Coast designs. The dangling pendant, a beautiful piece in itself, represents the orca’s dorsal fin.

Wampum has been used by coastal tribes for thousands of years. Items made from quahog shells, commonly called wampum, are culturally significant to New England tribes and are held in great esteem within families and within tribes.

Perry hand selects each quahog shell for color and other qualities. The shells are cut and drilled into tubular beads. Perry continues this traditional work form as a way of honoring her connection to her ancestors, their history, their way of life, and the ocean that sustains them.

The wampum section of the necklace is approximately 10″ long x 1/2″ wide. The pendant is 5/8″ wide by 1 1/2″ tall. The deerskin can be tied to different lengths, to fit as the wearer wishes.

The 5 strands of beads are painstakingly woven, as can be seen in the detail image. The deerskin is smoked and tanned in the traditional way of New England Native Americans.

Materials: quahog shells, hand-tanned deerskin, linen.

Woven section is 9 1/4″ x 1 3/8″; total length including choker and strip is 30″. Deerskin strip is knotted behind the neck when worn.
