    Nurtured by Prayer: Artist's Statement

"Like two sides of the same coin, Nurtured by Prayer wears both the masks of Sunset and Sunrise. They are sisters born of the same characteristics yet they remain unique. The headpiece of Sister Sunset bears the stars and the vastness of the universe while the headpiece of Sister Sunrise displays the radiance of the sun's rays from dawn to dusk. Sister Sunset wears the rays of sunlight upon her chin as she awakens during the last moments of day. Conversely Sunrise Sister has a star upon her as the last vestige of night fades into day. The sisters' mouths are extended in song softly and continually yielding praise and thanksgiving to our Creator." Joe Cajero Jr. The sunset pendant is 1 inch wide x 7/8 inches high to the top of the bail. All material except for leather cord is sterling silver. The symbols are in bas relief against an oxidized background. The dark background is more uniform than the images show; the camera picks up reflections that are generally not visible to the human eye.

    Natural Divinity: Artist's Statement

"The piece was inspired by the union and marriage of two friends. I wanted to incorporate all the things a couple would want to create and experience in the union of their lives as husband and wife. This piece reflects the achievement of a harmonious balance among the natural elements, as well as the importance of family and prayer. The stars at the top of the cross represent the vastness of the Heavens, as well as the notion that we ascend to a higher level of knowing. They represent the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. They also represent the union of mind, body, and spirit. The dragonflies on the right arm represent the masculine essence of life. On the left arm, the butterflies acknowledge all that is feminine. Together, they reflect the metamorphosis of life and the emerging of conscious awareness, the union between man and woman through marriage, as well as the metamorphosis that occurs within the individual who learns to integrate both masculine and feminine aspects of the inner self. Within the bottom panel of the cross, there are two altar steps: one large and one small. These altars represent a place of prayer and meditation. Its creation is where I became conscious of the often unnoticed intimate beauty of nature. This came to me as a result of quiet internal exploration while communing with nature. Over time, I believe this internal searching led me to the awareness of God's presence in all things. The second panel up holds four circles of various sizes. These circles represent human souls in their unique stages of spiritual evolution. The circular shape embodies the cyclic nature of life itself. The various sizes indicate individual paths of creation in which the soul chooses to engage. The third panel up contains a wave pattern, which represents water's life-giving properties, fluidity, and an openness for prosperity and wisdom to flow into one's life. In the center of the cross is a star. This represents the Creator's divine energy, which exists in all living things. A fully blossomed miniature flower represents the very soul of God. This serves as a gentle reminder that the Creator's presence can be found in the simplest display of nature, and that divinity is all around us." Joe Cajero Jr. Pendant is 3" high x 1 3/4 inches wide; it is 1/8" thick. The symbols are in bas relief against an oxidized background. The dark background is more uniform than the images show; the camera picks up reflections that are generally not visible to the human eye.

The contours are difficult to display in two-dimensional photographs, but they add a lot to the visual aesthetic when seen in person. Wampum has been used by coastal tribes for thousands of years. Items made from quahog shells, commonly called wampum, are culturally significant to New England tribes and are held in great esteem within families and within tribes. Elizabeth James-Perry Choker

    ,
Elizabeth James-Perry Choker An exquisite traditional Wampanoag woven choker in stunning deep purple and white colors by artist Elizabeth James Perry. Perry combines the patterns on the individually cut beads to maximum aesthetic effect. This is an orca (killer whale) representation reminiscent of Northwest Coast designs. The dangling pendant, a beautiful piece in itself, represents the orca's dorsal fin. Wampum has been used by coastal tribes for thousands of years. Items made from quahog shells, commonly called wampum, are culturally significant to New England tribes and are held in great esteem within families and within tribes. Perry hand selects each quahog shell for color and other qualities. The shells are cut and drilled into tubular beads. Perry continues this traditional work form as a way of honoring her connection to her ancestors, their history, their way of life, and the ocean that sustains them. The wampum section of the necklace is approximately 10" long x 1/2" wide. The pendant is 5/8" wide by 1 1/2" tall. The deerskin can be tied to different lengths, to fit as the wearer wishes. The 5 strands of beads are painstakingly woven, as can be seen in the detail image. The deerskin is smoked and tanned in the traditional way of New England Native Americans. Materials: quahog shells, hand-tanned deerskin, linen. Woven section is 9 1/4" x 1 3/8"; total length including choker and strip is 30". Deerskin strip is knotted behind the neck when worn.

Her mosaic designs are often backed with serpentine, a departure from shell, wood or other materials typically used by artists from her pueblo. The rolled turquoise in the title refers to the rounded turquoise beads of the necklace itself. These beads are more time consuming to make than traditional heishi style squared-off beads. They give the necklace a more contemporary, finished look. The mosaic colors in the fish contrast nicely with the rolled beads.
