Vintage Baleen Basket Pt. Hope John Long Sr. Eskimo Art
Baleen baskets, first conceived of in the1920s, are among the most difficult to weave because of the stiffness of the material. This basket is a fine example of a large scale weaving with an old ivory whale attached to the cover. The whale has primitive scrimshaw markings.
The basket is in good condition, with a few strands loose, but good structural integrity and no loss of baleen.
Basket is 7 1/2 inches in diameter x 5 1/2 inches high to the top of the ivory whale finial. The basket is not signed, but the previous owner, who had an extensive collection of Alaskan items, identified it as being made by John Long, Sr. of Point Hope, Alaska.
Circa mid 20th century.
