Deborah Brooks continues to make traditional Wabanaki baskets with a lot of braided sweetgrass. Deborah’s mother, Mary Gabriel, was known for this same characteristic, but few Wabanaki weavers today use braided sweetgrass extensively. We are grateful for Deborah’s continued use of this material, as it helps to perpetuate a cultural tradition.
This checkerboard basket comes from a large collection of Native American baskets; it was made and purchased in 2008. Ms. Brooks has made this checkerboard style for many years.
