Vintage Ivory Bracelet – Separately Carved Animals

    ,
Vintage Ivory Bracelet - Separately Carved Animals This is an exceptional bracelet, with a feature that is unlike any that we have seen or sold: each animal was carved separately and attached to the base with a tiny screw. The animals (two walrus, two seals, and two sled dogs) are beautifully carved, with black and red ink scrimshaw. The coup de grace among them is a wonderful, stately walrus, laying on its back. The color variations in the old ivory contrast nicely with the new ivory plates and animals c. 3rd qtr. 20th century The bracelet is strung with elastic cord which appears to be recently replaced. It will fit wrists of up to approximately 7 inches in circumference. The bracelet is 5/8 inch wide. Lincoln Milligrock Ivory Sled Dog Team Bracelet

Lincoln Milligrock Ivory Sled Dog Team Bracelet

    ,
Lincoln Milligrock Ivory Sled Dog Team Bracelet Lincoln Milligrock, Inupiaq artist from Little Diomede Island (1931 - 2010) was one of the last makers of carved animal bracelets. Most other bracelets of his we have encountered have featured sea mammals. This one features an entire sled dog team, including the sled and driver, four pairs of dogs pulling together, and the single lead dog. Recently strung on new elastic, the bracelet has an inside circumference of about 6 1/4 inches. It is approximately 3/8 inch wide. The animals are carved from fresh ivory and adorned with small scrimshaw details. The darker pieces are cross sections of old ivory, which contrast nicely with the white fresh ivory. While the artist was carving into the 21st century, we believe this bracelet dates to the 3rd or 4th quarter of the 20th century. Because the signature differs from later work of his, we believe this is an early piece. We continue to do research on it. Scrimshaw bowhead whale

This exquisite scrimshaw bowhead whale was purchased in 1967. While it may have been carved by an Alaskan Eskimo, we cannot readily identify it as such. As such, we cannot guarantee this item was made by an Eskimo. The old walrus ivory is likely a broken piece of an ancient artifact, such as a sled runner. Ivory is 4 1/4" x 1 1/4". Attached wooden base is 6" x 1 3/4" d x 3/4" high.

    Walrus tusk with scrimshaw

This walrus tusk was decorated with a hunting scene by Wilbur Walluk (1928 - 1968), an Inupiaq artist from Shishmaref. Walluk made detailed black and white drawings as well as scrimshaw items. This tusk depicts a hunter with his sled dog team hunting a standing polar bear. On the reverse side is a kayak leaving camp. There is a hole near the center of the reverse side that probably held a stand at one time. Tusk is approximately 15" long; 1 3/4" at its widest; 1 1/8" at its deepest

    ,
Max Ungarook was an Inupiat from Barrow, Alaska. This vintage figure, which probably dates from the 1950's or 1960's is carved from a whale tooth. Delicate scrimshaw adds life to the carving. The base of the carving shows the exterior of the tooth, which has some age to it, based on the darker color. The figure probably held a fishing implement in his hand, which now is left with an empty hole. 3 1/2" h x 1 1/2" w x 2" d

    Vintage Russian Dog Sled Team

Vintage Russian Dog Sled Team A dog sled team carving mounted on a hard black base. The carving comes in a box with a label with Cyrillic writing, including a date of 1974. From our research, it appears that the carving was made in Russia from bone. The base is made from Ebonite or a similar dark, hard rubber material. The back of the carving is unfinished, showing the organic nature of the material, which appears to be bone. Two caveats: we do not know if the carver was Siberian Yupik, or an indigenous person at all. We also suspect the carving was made from a template, because of the extreme evenness and symmetry of the features and details. Nevertheless, it is a very interesting and attractive carving. 8 1/2 in. long x 1 3/4 in. high; base is 5/8 in. deep, while carving is thinner. Please note that products containing any ivory or other marine mammal components cannot be shipped to New York or California. As of this writing, it is still legal to ship these products to all other states. Click here to see a brochure published by the U.S. Department of the Interior with more details on this topic. Because of the unknown origin of the material in this carving, we will observe the laws applying to marine mammal components.
