Alaskan Eskimo Bear and Walrus Ivory Carving
A standing polar bear and a walrus face off across the ice, with a shape in the center. Could the shape be a seal poking its head through the ice? We don’t know.
Carved from walrus tusk with scrimshaw features, the carving bears the inscription “Made by Harrison M., Savoonga Alaska”. Because of the age of the item, we attribute the carving to Harrison Miklahok Sr., rather than Jr. Some wear in the scrimshaw indicates the carving was well loved.
Circa 4th quarter 20th century
8 inches long x 2 inches wide x 4 1/2 inches high. Base is a good-sized section of a walrus tusk.
