Ten seals on an ice flow Alaskan Eskimo Ivory
A fabulous composition of ten seals in and out of ice holes. The more detailed seals have scrimshaw features. A clever use of an antique ivory sled runner with holes. Some seals are carved from fresh ivory and others are carved from old ivory, sometimes referred to as fossil ivory.
Base is 15 inches long x 2 5/8 inches wide x 1 inch high. Largest complete seal is 1 5/8 inches long; shortest complete seal is 1 1/4 inches long.
This item, along with many more, came out of the collection of the late Russel McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin spent several years in Alaska in the early 1950s, where he collected hundreds of pieces of Eskimo/Inuit artwork and artifacts.
