Native American Baskets Rain Scott Avanyu Olla

Rain Scott, from Acoma Pueblo, makes baskets from folded paper. While his technique is new and innovative, he pays tribute to the traditions of his people both in form (olla) and in theme (Avanyu). This basket is made from black as well as cream colored paper.

Two items have been added to make a cultural connection: a turquoise cabochon (often associated with female energy) and a branch of coral (often associated with male energy). The shape of the coral represents, in this case, the legendary Avanyu, a powerful waer snake in traditional teachings.

Basket is 12 1/2 inches high including coral finial; 9 1/2 inches high without coral; 5 1/2 inches diameter at its widest.
