Eskimo-Inuit Bear with Scrimshaw Seal 1950s Ivory
$475.00
Eskimo-Inuit Bear with Scrimshaw Seal 1950s Ivory
A hunting scene depicting a polar bear with its prey, a seal. The seal has nice scrimshaw markings. Carved from old ivory; the ivory that is the base has been deeply colored in its aging process in the mud. The ivory the bear and seal are made from has picked up more subtle yellow tinges. The black and red ink around and in the bear’s mouth are typical of Alaskan Native carvings of the early to mid 20th century.
Including the base, the carving is 4 7/16 inches long x 2 inches wide x 2 1/8 inches high
This item, along with many more, came out of the collection of the late Russell McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin spent several years in Alaska in the early 1950s, where he collected hundreds of pieces of Eskimo/Inuit artwork and artifacts.
