Bear with seal 1950s Eskimo-Inuit Ivory Baleen
A hunting scene depicting a polar bear with its prey, a seal. Carved from old ivory with a baleen base. The black and red ink around and in the bear’s mouth are typical of Alaskan Native carvings of the early to mid 20th century.
Including the baleen base, the carving is 4 inches long x 1 1/2 inches wide x 1 5/8 inches high
This item, along with many more, came out of the collection of the late Russell McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin spent several years in Alaska in the early 1950s, where he collected hundreds of pieces of Eskimo/Inuit artwork and artifacts.
