Lynn Quam, of the Quam carver family, is a well-known Zuni carver mostly of buffalo fetishes made from semi-precious stones, such as malachite, wild horse marble, and Picasso marble. In this case, he used Orthoceras Fossil Stone for its hardness, smooth surface capability, and interesting fossil designs. He finished the carving with turquoise horns and eyes. Orthoceras were ancestors of squids and lived in the seas 450 million years ago.
