Zuni Fetishes Lena Boone Red Slag Glass Mole
Lena Boone carves Zuni fetishes in an old-style manner, similar in some ways to her famous ancestor carvers. She is the granddaughter of Teddy Weahkee and daughter of Edna Leki, who is believed to have been the first Zuni female fetish carver. She has carved a mole out of glass slag, the byproduct of smelting and usually composed of metal oxides and silicon dioxide. Not only is the red color unusual but working with this red slag glass had to be challenging. In addition, she added an offering composed of mother-of-pearl arrow, coral and turquoise stones, and brown and white beads.
5/8 in. Tall x 2 1/8 in. Long x 1 in. Wide
Carved ca. 2007
