Kateri Sanchez is a member of the well-known Quandelacy family of Zuni carvers. She has developed a unique style of maiden carvings, even among her family members. Her carvings often include owls, as does this one made from peacock ore.
This carving has a maiden with a mother-of-pearl face on one side, two maidens on another side, and an owl on another. The owl has great attitude!
Peacock ore is a form of chalcopyrite, a copper ore. The colors are created by oxidizing the stone.
