Early 20th Century Eskimo-Inuit Ivory Doll
$1,800.00
Early 20th Century Eskimo-Inuit Ivory Doll
A charming and very hard to find Alaskan doll carved from old ivory, though the body is much lighter than the attached head. While this doll was collected in the 1950s, it has the look of an earlier era. Our best estimate is that it dates to the first quarter of the 20th century. Hand tool marks abound, with no sign that power tools were used.
The doll has markings indicating the traditional male haircut of St. Lawrence Island. The bulge at the groin is another indicator that the doll is male. Other inked markings include facial features, a collar, a belt, and very stylized, flat arms and hands. The ears are nicely carved.
The size of the doll tells us the body was carved from an old, excavated male walrus tusk.
12 inches long x 2 1/2 inches wide x 1 1/2 inches deep
This item, along with many more, came out of the collection of the late Russell McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin spent several years in Alaska in the early 1950s, where he collected hundreds of pieces of Eskimo/Inuit artwork and artifacts.
