Vintage Alaskan Eskimo/Inuit Ivory Umiaq
A lovely miniature umiaq (open multi-passenger boat) carved from ivory. Inside the boat, under the seats, are a number of small ivory paddles. Umiaqs are not a common theme among ivory carvers, making them an uncommon find. It appears the boat was mounted on a base at one time, as two baleen pegs and some wood splinters remain.
2 1/2 inches long x 5/8 inches wide, x 1/2 inch high, not including pegs.
This item, along with many more, came out of the collection of the late Russell McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin spent several years in Alaska in the early 1950s, where he collected hundreds of pieces of Eskimo/Inuit artwork and artifacts.
