Stepped baleen basket with whale fluke finial by Alma Johnston. Famed baleen basket maker Don Johnston, Alma’s father, is her teacher and mentor. The stepped design is her own innovation. It adds complexity to the weaving but also great beauty.

Small origami vessel by Acoma’s Rain Scott. Note how the rim of the vessel turns into the vessel at the top. This gives the rim a three dimensional aspect compared with flat lipped rims.
It’s a very special item, available now at homeandaway.gallery

Rain Scott, Acoma Pueblo artist, created a lovely origami bowl with an infinity rim. The rim turns inward at the top and creates depth and a three dimensional aspect compared with a flat rim. Frederica Antonio, also from Acoma, is known for her ceramic pot infinity rims.
Rain Scott’s paper origami vessels are innovative and unique, yet they are unmistakable examples of Native American art.
Available at Home & Away Gallery. #rainscott #acomapueblo #nativeamericanart #origami #nativeamericanpottery #homeandawaygallery #acomapottery

This is the reel I meant to post a day or two ago. Four new Wabanaki baskets in the gallery: quality, not quantity, right?
First is a magnificent curl basket by Passamaquoddy weaver Kenny Keezer. At over 12 inches in diameter, it has great presence that just made me say Wow a few times when I first saw it!
Next is a small square basket with beautiful colors by the incomparable Theresa Secord.
The round basket with lots of braided sweetgrass is by up-and-coming weaver Erica Menard, who studied with none other than Theresa Secord.
Last, but not least, is a lovely birch bark container by one our favorite birch bark workers, Butch Phillips. He created an unusual basket in that the outside of the bark is on the outside of the container. For some further interest, he added three plaques with a bear, a beaver, and a moose. A second moose adorns the cover.
The basket by Kenny Keezer is on hold for a customer, but the others are still available at www.homeandaway.gallery.

Our new gallery space was just painted. The two young men in the second photo helped me move everything in. Now the setup starts. Put the glass back on the shelves, unpack the inventory, and put it back on display.
Oh, before that happens, my granddaughter is going to help with interior design. She`ll help me figure out where everything gets placed. It`s a perfect space for Home & Away!
It`ll be a number of weeks before we`re ready to hand visitors. In the meantime, the online basket is fully operational, so order away!
