Vintage Wabanaki Creel Style Basket
From an extensive basket collection comes a vintage creel-style basket of exceptional beauty. Use of Hong Kong cord, a manufactured material sometimes used as a substitute for braided sweetgrass dates this basket to the early 1960s at the latest. It likely precedes that, and could be as old as 1940s. In this case, the maker used Hong Kong cord for the handle and braided sweetgrass across the basket, combining the two materials to good effect.
While the basket is in the style of a fish creel, it is smaller than most creels, indicating it could have been made as a decorative item, rather than utilitarian.
