Vintage Hooper Bay Dance Fans
These dance fans were acquired by a woman who lived in Hooper Bay, Alaska in the early 1970’s. They were made and used in local Yup’ik dances, as well as in the Eskimo Olympics. They are woven from both natural color and dyed grasses in the tradition of the Yup’ik weavers from the Hooper Bay area. The woven fans are surrounded by fur, possibly wolf, which provides the movement as the village women move their arms in the traditional dances.
Fans are each approximately 3 in. wide x 3 1/4 in. high; they are approximately 6 1/2 in. wide x 5 in. high including fur.
