Vintage Hooper Bay Basket – Red and Blue Butterflies
A beautiful Hooper Bay grass basket with red and blue butterflies acquired from the basket maker by a woman who lived in Hooper Bay, Alaska in the early 1970’s. She attributes the basket to Nina Rivers, a local resident and artisan. The basket is woven from both natural color and dyed grasses in the tradition of the Yup’ik weavers from the Hooper Bay area.
The natural grass has a nice golden patina acquired over 40 + years. The dyed grasses have faded slightly, but are still very attractive. There is very minor grass loss on the rim, as well as on and near the bottom.
The basket is attributed to Nina Rivers from Hooper Bay.
