Sylvester Ayek Ivory Right Whales in the Round Eskimo Art

Born in 1940 on King Island, Sylvester Ayek is a very well regarded Inupiaq artist. This carving reflects one of the forms he uses regularly: fine carvings in the round, with negative space in the center. These right wales, carved from walrus tusk, are accompanied by one bunch of brown baleen which represents the spout emerging from a whale’s blowhole.
