Sarah Sockbeson Point Basket
Sarah Sockbeson, a young Penobscot basketmaker, has enjoyed great success with her richly colored, tightly woven baskets. In 2015, she won top awards at Santa Fe Indian Market, one of the highest achievements in the Native American art world.
Also in 2015, her work was included in the Portland Art Museum’s Biennial Exhibition, alongside several other important Maine Indian basket makers.
The colors in this basket are deceptively simple looking: light brown with the look of cedar, blue standards and grey weavers. The wonder is in the exact shades the artist has created. The purple tinge in the blue and the rich grey contrast beautifully with the more subtle light brown and natural ash colors of the points. The cover mixes the colors in entirely new juxtapositions, with the addition of a generous band of sweetgrass.
A piece of deer antler is Sockbeson’s signature finial .
