Passamaquoddy Master Basket Maker Mary Mitchell Gabriel Sewing Basket
Mary Gabriel was the matriarch of a family of master Wabanaki basket makers: her daughters Sylvia, Clare, and Deborah are (or were) master weavers in their own right. Mary’s basket-making legacy lives on; not only did she teach her daughters to weave, but she and her daughters taught others. For example, Sylvia Gabriel taught Gal Frey to weave, while Gal, in turn, taught her son Jeremy to weave.
The basket is signed and dated 98. It is in excellent condition, with only some minor fading on the dyed ash on the cover.
Accompanying the basket wil be photos of Mary Gabriel with this basket and a second sewing basket, as well as other photos.
