Out of a New York state basket collection comes this masterful black ash and sweetgrass basket made attributed to NEA National Heritage Fellow Clara Keezer. Keezer was one of the long-time Wabanaki who kept the art of basket making alive, making it possible for the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance to create an apprenticeship program for younger weaver.
While the red of the body of this basket remains vivid, the green leaves and stem on the cover have faded somewhat.
While unsigned, this basket has been attributed to Clara Keezer, who made many fruit and vegetable marketw, inluding strawberry, blueberry, corn, and more, in this style.
4 inches diameter x 6 1/2 inches high, including loop/finial.
