Native American Art Aron Griffith Premium Earth Effigy Wabanki Birch Bark Basket Tree Design

Aron Griffith, Maliseet artist, creates effigies of Mother Earth from birch bark with various designs as tributes to her and the gifts she offers us. The birch tree has long provided Northeast Woodland Indians with material for containers as well as canoes. Inside the doll is a small ear of corn, representing the sustenance provided by Mother Earth.

The design on this doll is of a tree. On the doll’s back is a pouch holding a bouquet of hand-dyed wool flowers made by Penobscot artist Pam outdusis Cunningham. This figure also has features that are not present on most of the artist’s effigies: tiny wampum earrings, a wampum necklace, a tree design on the pouch, and dark binding material. You may need to look at the magnified image on the screen to see the earrings.
