Frances Soctomah Ribbon Curl Basket

Frances Soctomah started making baskets at age 8, under the tutelage of her grandmother Molly Neptune Parker. She has recently begun to make baskets in a serious way, making very fast progress in both her designs and technique. We are very impressed with her work, and expect her to become one of the best basket makers of her generation.

There are several wonderful elements to this basket. First is the colorful, but subdued palette. Second is the pattern of ribbon curls that create frames for the colors. Perhaps most important is the use of braided sweetgrass on the cover, including a frog handle, a device not often seen among today’s basket makers.

Overall, this basket will make a fine addition to any collection.
