A beautifully woven black ash basket with sweetgrass and birch bark panels by Passamaquoddy artist Otter. The weaving is tight and precise, the braided sweetgrass provides wonderful texture and color contrasts, and the stylized puffins on the top and bottom panels of the basket are masterfully etched onto the surface of the birch bark.
Puffins are resident on a few islands off the coast of Maine, being brought back almost from extinction by conservation organizations.
