Butch Phillips Birch Bark Moose Call 2
Penobscot artist Butch Phillips makes canoes and other items from birch bark. This item is a moose call, used by hunters to lure the animals during a hunt. Phillips’ moose call is etched with traditional Wabanaki designs, some of them inspired by beaded designs on a chief’s coat the artist has seen. The double curves and other shapes have fours sides, referring to the four tribes of the Wabanaki confederacy: Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, and Maliseet.
