Aron Griffith Floral Mother Earth Effigy
Aron Griffith, Maliseet artist, creates earth effigies from birch bark with various designs. While they are often called dolls, Aron further describes them as tributes to Mother Earth and the gifts she offers us. The birch tree has long provided Northeast Woodland Indians with material for containers as well as canoes. Inside the doll is a small ear of corn, representing the sustenance provided by Mother Earth.
The design theme of this doll is flowers, not unlike the traditional flora growing in the Northeastern woodlands, home of the Wabanaki people. On the doll’s back is a pack holding coastal sweetgrass, sage, evergreen leaves, and a birch bark feather.
6 3/4 inches high x 7 3/4 inches wide x 2 1/2 inches deep
