Vintage Santo Domingo Thunderbird Mosaic Necklace
This is a statement piece with a Thunderbird mosaic on a large white shell. Primitive in nature, the Thunderbird is a stunning image composed of turquoise, coral, pipestone (catlinite), and various forms of shell.
There are twelve carved shell birds on the necklace, as well as six turquoise carved birds, two round pearlescent beads atop the large shell pendant, turquoise heishi beads; two plastic cones hold the sterling silver clasp.
The use of plastic in combination with natural materials became common among Native Americans, particularly from Santo Domingo Pueblo, in the era of the Great Depression, as resourceful artists reached for any material that would enable them to make a living. This is in contrast to use of plastic in the late 20th and early 21st century, where unscrupulous artists and merchants attempt to pass it off as a natural material.
Necklace is 21 1/2 in. long; shell pendant is 4 1/2 in. wide x 1/2 in. wide.
