Qalupali (ice edge monster)

$1,300.00

A sea creature named Qalupali, by famed Inuit artist Kananginak Pootoogook. Qalupali (or Kalupalik) is the name of a legendary sea creature that was rarely seen but often heard under the winter ice. It made a haunting “humming” sound before coming through the ice and dragging unsuspecting children to the bottom of the sea. Parents would often warn of Calupali to keep their children from wandering off on the dangerous ice. Like many Inuit legends it was used as a cautionary tale to keep children out of trouble.

Nicely carved from dark green serpentine.
