Penobscot Rare Birch Bark Moose Call Butch Phillips
Penobscot Rare Birch Bark Moose Call Butch Phillips
Penobscot artist Butch Phillips makes canoes and other items from birch bark. This item is a moose call, used by hunters to lure the animals during a hunt. If you have not heard a moose call demonstration, you can watch a video of same here: Moose call demonstration. Nearly all birch bark items are made from bark sustainably harvested from living trees. In contrast, this moose call is made from the bark of a dead tree, a rare source which gives it a dark tinge not found on many birch bark creations.
Phillips’ moose call is etched with traditional Wabanaki designs, including double curves, deer tracks, woodlands floral designs, and more. The double curves and other shapes have four sides, referring to the four tribes of the Wabanaki confederacy: Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, and Maliseet.
The breadth and quality of designs, as well as the exceptionally dark bark make this a hard-to-find museum-quality work.
17 1/4 inches. long x 7 1/4 inches diameter at its widest.
