Penobscot artist Butch Phillips makes canoes and other items from birch bark. This canoe is a fine example of his work, with its fine craftsmanship as well as etched design.
Phillips’ canoe is etched with traditional Wabanaki designs, including double curves, fleur-de-lis, and triangles. The double curves and other shapes have four sides, referring to the four tribes of the Wabanaki confederacy: Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, and Maliseet.
Wooden paddles and fishing spear included.
