Penobscot artist Butch Phillips makes canoes and other items from birch bark. This container is a fine example of his work, with its fine craftsmanship as well as etched design.
Phillips cylindrical container is etched with traditional Wabanaki designs, including double curves and willow leaves. The perimeter of the cover has a faux scalloped edge. The double curves and other shapes have four sides, referring to the four tribes of the Wabanaki confederacy: Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, and Maliseet.
