This round black ash basket by NEA National Heritage Fellow Clara Keezer includes a lovely set of braided sweetgrass rings on the cover. Keezer was one of the long-time Wabanaki who kept the art of basket making alive, making it possible for the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance to create an apprenticeship program for younger weaver.
Natural ash baskets are considered the purest form of this kind of basketry and are treasured by some collectors.
