Fred Tomah Maliseet Basket Maker Master Eagle Basket
The late Fred Tomah made exquisite baskets in his unique style, striking for their black and white contrast and for his use of quatrefoil in the design. This is number five (signed # 5 on the bottom) of his master baskets, with a stylized eagle motif throughout the outside. Most of his master baskets are in tribal or institutional collections, so it is rare to find one available.
Note the black dye on the outside of the basket has faded to a slightly lighter color, compared with the dyed splints on the inside and bottom.
Basket is 15 inches in diameter x 15 1/2 inches high. Woven in 2008.
