Eric Otter Bacon Passamaquoddy Ash Sweetgrass and Birch Bark Acorn Basket
A beautifully woven black ash acorn basket with braided sweetgras and birch bark. Braiding sweetgrass is a time consuming process, but the addition of it to the cover of the basket is a great look. The birch bark, both on the cover and on the base is etched with Wabanaki double curve designs. The split ash stem is bound to the basket with spruce root, which is also present on the vertical shaft and on the separate base.
The size, shape, handsome base, long stem, and tapered design give this tightly woven basket great presence. The ash splint ascending from the bottom to the top at a diagonal shows that the artist used one long strand to make the basket.
6 1/2 inches in diameter, 4 1/2 inches high; 7 1/2 inches high with stem and 11 inches with base included.
