Clara Mattice Halibut Skin Basket
This fish skin basket came from the collection of a gentleman who lived in Alaska for over twenty years and purchased a number of Native American and Eskimo items. The basket was purchased in 2004 from the Alaska Native Medical Center shop. While we do not know Mattice’s origins, we expect she was Athabascan.
Fish skin was used extensively by native Alaskans for waterproof clothing and containers. This basket has a sealskin rim and caribou fur adornment. It is very attractive and is in excellent condition, with no tears or damage.
Note: because of marine mammal content, this item cannot be shipped outside of the United States.
