The Maine Historical Society, on Congress Street in Portland, is currently showing a wonderful exhibit about the Wabanaki nations. The exhibit digs deep into life of the Maine tribes post contact, including a series of treaties with Massachusetts (which governed the Maine territory until 1820) as well as other items of historic interest. It moves forward through history culminating in contemporary times, covering culture and art as well as politics.
MHS Curator Tilly Laskey collaborated with a number of people from the Wabanaki and Abenaki tribes to insure that the voice of the indigenous people is included in the exhibit.
