Passamaquoddy Basket Clare Gabriel Braided Sweetgrass
This is a lovely statement basket by Clare Gabriel, Passamaquoddy weaver. Aside from the pleasing size and shape, two things stand out about this: Claie is one of the few weavers who followed the original founders of the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance who continued to use braided sweetgrass in her baskets. Clare learned this technique from her mother, Mary Gabriel, who was renowned for her use of braided sweetgrass.
The second item we find of interest is the mass of curls that are in the place of a finial. This is an unusual configuration to sit atop a Wabanaki basket.
