Dorothy Savage Joseph Birch Bark Tray

This birch bark tray by Dorothy Savage Joseph, an Athabascan Indian originally from Holy Cross, Alaska, came from the estate of a gentleman who lived in Alaska during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It has a lot going for it, including a pleasing shape, good quality bark, nice contrast between the dark inner bark and the white outer bark, and beautifully dyed root lashings (likely spruce root) woven into a checked pattern. Aesthetically, it is a great vessel all around.

Joseph is the author of Fishcamp. Click or tap here to see the book on Amazon.
