Clara Mattice Halibut Skin Basket

This fish skin basket came out of a collection of a gentleman who lived in Alaska for over twenty years and collected a number of Native American and Eskimo items. The basket was purchased in 2004 from the Alaska Native Medical Center shop. While we do not know Mattice’s origins, we expect she is or was Athabascan.

Fish skin was used extensively by native Alaskans for waterproof clothing and containers. This basket has a sealskin rim and caribou fur adornment. It is very attractive and is in excellent condition, with no tears or damage.

The photo with a white background depicts the translucency and glow of the basket when backlit.

Note: because of marine mammal content, this item cannot be shipped outside of the United States.
